The Central Highlands District covers all of Penobscot and Piscataquis counties and is the largest district in the Katahdin Area Council. The region is home to landmarks like Paul Bunyan, Bangor Raceway, Bangor International Airport, and many civic organizations including the Bangor Area Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, Kiwanis, Lions, and Masonic Lodges.
Maine’s Central Highlands is filled with natural wonders: Mount Katahdin, Moosehead Lake, hundreds of thousands of acres of undeveloped land, countless mountain peaks, over 200 waterfalls, and thousands of miles of trails for hiking, biking, skiing, snowmobiling, or ATV adventures. Forests, rivers, and lakes provide excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, hunting, paddling, and fishing.
The region is also home to vibrant towns and Maine’s third-largest city, Bangor, offering concerts, museums, galleries, local cuisine, and craft beer. Annual festivals and fairs celebrate everything from town histories to whoopie pies, seaplanes, and ice fishing.
Old Town is the ancestral home of the Penobscot Nation, with the Penobscot River remaining central to community life. The area boasts Husson University, the University of Maine, Beal College, Old Town Canoe, Dysart’s Restaurant, and scenic treasures like the Lincoln Lakes.
